00-Boyce.73YOU ONCE SAID THAT COMPETING HAS PLAYED A BIG roll in improving the quality of taxidermy in our industry. I agree, but what about taxidermists who compete more for ribbons and less for the learning process? Could you comment on this?

Mike. To me, if you really evaluate it, a ribbon is meaningless--in a way. I wish I had a dollar for every guy who has said, "I have a box of ribbons but I cannot make a living." The ribbon, in and of itself, really doesn't mean anything. What really is meaningful is the knowledge that is acquired in the achievement. I don't think you ever grow, unless you try to achieve more than what you are. Which means stepping back and letting a judge tear it apart. That may be painful, but that is really where the knowledge and growth comes from. In the end ...
