THE “BACK
TO BASICS” SERIES OF ARTICLES began with BREAKTHROUGH issue 38 in the fall
of 1994. The feature was originally written by Gary Bowen of Cedar Rapids,
Michigan. Gary did a fine job of writing twenty-four articles over a six-year
period. Even though “Back to Basics” articles are primarily intended to help
beginners, they have also occasionally included information that addresses
business management. In Issue 50, Gary stressed the importance of increasing
productive work time, and in Issue 53, he covered professionalism and some
tips for presenting your business to potential clients. For this
BREAKTHROUGH article, I have decided to resume the business management
aspect of the series.
A combination of proper training, talent, and motivation are often the
recipe for creating a business opportunity. Exploiting opportunity with a
functional taxidermy studio in a busy location will inevitably result in a
substantial base of clients. The successful taxidermist may eventually
discover that the work load has become too great to conquer alone. At this
point, the taxidermist will be forced into some serious business decisions.
