THIS ARTICLE IS THE FIRST OF A TWO-PART series on whitetail deer earbutts. In this first installment, I will demonstrate how to sculpt a proper earbutt, displaying attention to even the smallest details. The second article in the next issue will demonstrate how to transfer the detailed sculpture into an actual mount.

By now, I hope, my readers have set aside the impression that “Back to Basics” articles are only targeted towards helping beginners. I hate to say it, but it’s the “old guys” who most often need to brush up on new techniques. I have been to many additional taxidermy shows in the last few years, and it seems that a lot of folks are still in the dark on the latest methods.
