EVERY
INTRODUCTORY ARTICLE ABOUT mountain goats seems to start with, “A mountain
goat is not really a goat at all, but may be related to the chamois of
Europe.” Early explorers saw the white animal with a “goatee” hanging off
its chin
and reported it as a white goat in the mountains. Whatever it is, everyone
around here in Colorado knows it as a mountain goat. In Colorado there are
about 600 mountain goats and about 60 mountain goat licenses issued every
year to hunters. About 3,000 people apply every year under a complex drawing
system, so for all practical purposes, it is a once-in-a-lifetime hunt. The
good news is that if you are
drawn, the license only costs $150, and many of the goats are in the
mountains 40 miles west of Denver.
