ANTLERS

In preparation for the rut, antlered game remove the velvet covering from their antlers by rubbing them against shrubs and trees. In the process the white color of the antlers is replaced by a rich brown color. Certain areas of antlers, such as the tips, are polished to a high degree, causing those surfaces to remain white. If antlers are left outdoors and exposed to the elements, they will lose their rich brown color and eventually turn white.

Taxidermists can be called upon to restore the natural color of antlers. Through experiments with various techniques, I have settled on one method which appears to provide the best control and final....
