BIRD ANATOMY

THE SECOND SPECIES FOR THIS BIRD anatomy reference series is the spruce grouse (Falcipennis canadensis). With over 550,000 taken each year in North America, a male spruce grouse, with its scarlet eye combs, makes a striking addition to a sportsman’s collection.

I selected the spruce grouse for several reasons. Firstly, I have already featured a 2-part in-depth anatomy study (see Issues 52 and 53) of the far more widespread ruffed grouse. Secondly, spruce grouse are primarily northern birds (in comparison to bobwhites, the first species selected), so it covers a great range of morphological differences and will appeal to the spectrum of northern taxidermists.
