NOW THAT IT HAS BEEN A FEW ISSUES SINCE MY FIRST ARTICLE (see "Reproduction Fins for Skin Mounts," BREAKTHROUGH Issue #78, pp69-72), I thought you could continue with developing your molding techniques by working with some fish heads. All the fish I skin-mount will be fitted with artificial heads. I believe they look better and are so much easier to work with. Once you decide to go artificial, you have the option of measuring and purchasing a head from various suppliers, or if you are inclined, you may mold and cast a head yourself. I recommend to all my students to make a reusable room temperature vulcanized (RTV) mold for species that they mount with regularity, and either purchase or make a one-time mold for the uncommon species. This article will focus on both ways of performing this task.
