The Golden Eagle

Getting the opportunity to mount a golden eagle, like the one a customer deposited on our admitting table a few months ago, was a tremendous privilege. I've only mounted three in the last twelve years, and each of them was a unique and interesting challenge.

In Canada, like in the U.S., a permit from Fish and Wildlife is necessary to possess one of these magnificent specimens prior to submitting it for taxidermy work. In fact, a permit is mandatory for eagles or any native birds of prey. In the U.S. I believe it's practically impossible to obtain such a permit at all, unless you are commissioned to do the work for a museum or university. Many U.S. citizens say they hope this will change soon, because hundreds of hawks, owls and eagles are accidentally killed annually, only to be left by a roadside to rot. In Canada as well, it wasn't very long ago that all eagles were excluded among the avian predators (found dead) for which citizens could obtain a permit for...
