IN TWENTY YEARS of taxidermy, I can only tally up a few original ideas that would be considered innovative. Most of my ideas have just been improvements of someone else's methods. However, one idea that has stood the test of time is a process for making catfish whiskers on fiberglass reproductions.

There is not a huge demand for catfish reproductions, but I usually get a few orders each year. The whiskers were always a dilemma because they need to taper to a fine point and be made from a flexible material that can be bent and shaped, but one that is rigid enough so...
