Whitetail Earbutts

ONE OF MY FAVORITE EXPRESSIONS IS "There's no right way to do the wrong thing." The "wrong thing" has certainly found its niche in taxidermy when it comes to mounted whitetail earbutts. Improper placement of ears and earbutt muscles is possibly the most common difficulty taxidermists experience.

Years of accumulated experience can sometimes perpetuate false confidence that the "wrong thing" is actually right. The perception of what is right becomes based upon the technique or methods used and not from a true study of reality and anatomy. Oddly enough, the study of anatomy is too often considered as an advanced stage of learning in taxidermy. Becoming familiar with specific detailed anatomy should actually be the beginning foundation of a taxidermist's education...
