Two Trips, Two Friends

GERRY
McGAURAN HAS BEEN A FRIEND AND A CUStomer of ours for many years. He lives in
County Cavan, Ireland. In a letter I wrote to him seventeen years ago, I
suggested that since he was a member of the International Guild of Taxidermy (IGT),
he should consider attending the annual convention, which was being held in
Wisconsin that year. Since my wife, Barbara, and I would be driving to it, I
also suggested that he would be welcome to return with us to our home in
northeastern Minnesota to spend some time with us.
Gerry wrote back that he appreciated our invitation,
but since it was a long way for him to travel and would be costly, he'd have to
decline. About a month later, however, Gerry wrote us again and said he would be
making the trip.
We met Gerry in person for the first time at the
convention and we hit it off right away. During his stay with us we showed him
the sights and I took him fishing. I don't remember if we caught any fish, but I
do recall one evening on a local lake. It was twilight, a full moon in the early
