GAMEBIRD TAXIDERMY
In the summer of 1998, an article in Breakthrough greatly affected the next few years of my life. It was a wonderful photographic article by Lovett Williams on ocellated turkeys. I was enthralled, mesmerized, and truly amazed--I had to hunt them!
Breakthrough is a wonderful thought- and idea-provoking journal. With every issue, I gain new ideas, learn new tricks of the trade, and see wonderful projects by some of the industry's best talent. The magazine never ceases to amaze me. Such was the case the afternoon I received my Breakthrough with the ocellated turkey article (Issue 52). With much excitement, I read the photo article on this beautiful and somewhat mystical bird of the Yucatan Peninsula and Southern Mexican jungles and forests. Pavo Real! Pavo de Monte! Fowl of the thick brush, Meleagris ocellata.
I was amazed. I was infatuated. I have read, literally, many dozens, if not
hundreds, of bird books from far away countries to the United States, from
